2019 AFCON: Three Takeaways From Nigeria’s 1-0 Win Against Guinea

The Super Eagles on Wednesday became the first team and country to reach the Round of 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt at the Alexandria Stadium.

Sportinglife.ng takes a look at three takeaways from the match.

Three Takeaways

1. Akpeyi still not convincing

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi still needs to work on his confidence level if he is to cement his shirt as the Eagles number one choice. He should be thanking his stars that the Guineans who were more business-like in the first half did not convert their chances. The Guineans had three shots on target with one of them rattling
Akpeyi.

2. Ighalo’s selfish play

Odion Ighalo may want to end up as the competition’s highest scorer but he must learn to be a team player. That the Eagles failed to increase their goals tally against the Guineans should be put at the doorstep of Ighalo who in the 32nd minute should have passed the ball to Ahmed Musa to score. But decided to go solo and missed.

3. Mikel’s absence in the midfield felt

Alex Iwobi was given the role of playmaker in the midfield in the absence of Mikel Obi who was dropped to the bench.  However, the absence of the Eagles captain was still felt. A Mikel in the team would have helped to organize the midfield.
