2019 Lagos Open: Debutant Burundian set for final

Eighteen- year- Old Burundi’s Sada Nahimana will take on Brazil’s Laura Pigozzi in today’s final in the women’s singles of the first leg of the 2019 Lagos Open International Tennis Championship holding at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan.

Despite playing in Lagos for the first time, the Burundian was ruthless as she swept aside top European oppositions to berth in the final.

She defeated Sweden’s Fanny Oslund in straight set of 6-3, 6-1 in the semi-final decided yesterday.

Earlier, the Brazilian star had edged out Nigeria’s Oyinlomo Quadre nemesis – India’s Riya Bhatia in the second semi-final in another straight set of 6-2, 6-2.

In the men’s singles, Frenchman Calvin Hemery edged out Zimbabwean Takanyi Garanganga 6-4, 6-0 to get to the final, and he will slug it out with Bahrain’s Setkic Aldin, who also defeated Pichler David of Bosnia and Herzegovina 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 in the second semifinal tie.

However, Nigerian players are eagerly waiting for the second leg to serve off while the Local Organising Committee (LOC) has put in place an exciting final for the first leg of the International Tennis Federation (ITF)-sanctioned tournament.
