Organisers of the annual Lagos State Inter-School Athletics Cup have announced the kick-off of the fifth edition of the competition for October 13, with over 50 schools expected to compete at the championship.
According to the organiser – Wonderland Sports, the 50 private schools in Lagos State rival for honours as this year’s edition brings in new sporting activities for the competition.
Coordinator of the competition and CEO of Wonderland Sports, Tayo Adeyemo, said that the only way to curb away social vices among our teenagers and our youth is by bringing together of Schools to have such competitions.
In addition, he said reasons for the inclusion of new sports in the competition like scramble and chess is to make students have a better field of Sport.
“It is going to affect the future of our sports in Nigeria and we also consider the fact that today we don’t have school sports and this is the reason we are having lots of social vices among our teenagers and our youths so for us at wonderland, we said okay let’s bring schools together to compete, to promote sports let’s have a
healthy rivalry among schools in the field of sports, that’s why we extend it to other games like scramble, chess, in the past it used to be football, basketball, volleyball and athletics and this year we are bringing swimming,
scrabble and chess, we want the students to have a field of sport and if you notice in Nigeria here that most of our athletes it’s when they finish secondary school they start seeing sport equipment,” he said.

The keenly competing schools will rival each other in the Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Swimming, Scrabble, Chess, Athletics, Bicycle Race, Tug-of-War and Table Tennis.
