Foremost oil company, Total Nigeria Limited has committed N60 million for the sponsorship of the NBBF Men Division one and two leagues in a two-year deal.

At the agreement signing ceremony yesterday at Total’s headquarters in Lagos, Managing Director/ Managing Director Total Upstream Companies in Nigeria, Nicolas Terraz said that the company took the bold step to sponsor Nigeria basketball to further reinforce our partnership with Nigeria and “our desire to support the development of Nigerian sports.”

“With this sponsorship, we acknowledge that we are part of the make-up of Nigeria where we have been for more than 60 years.  We are also aware that in Nigeria, sport simply means unity, friendship, Solidarity and energy. We want to sustain this energy with this agreement we have signed with the belief that this marks the start of a journey that will be of great benefit to NBBF and Total,” Terraz added.

He also expressed hope that the sponsorship would spur Nigerian basketball teams to greater glory in local and
international competition.

President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) Engr Musa Kida said the sponsorship is a breakthrough for the domestic league in the history of Nigerian basketball. He said the sponsorship would enable the NBBF take the game to the grassroots so that the youth and other stakeholders who have been neglected for so long would have the opportunity to compete in their backyard.

Kida said that the NBBF has designed a new league format for the lower divisions to maximize the benefits of the sponsorship.

“From the competition format, by the time a player moves to the lower divisions to the Premier League, he would have been properly groomed and ready for the rudiments of the higher echelon of the Nigerian basketball league, and indeed professional arena.”

The league format, which will see team playing about 30 games, will take off mid-June after registration and consultation with stakeholders.

Total is the title sponsor of the CAF Nations Cup.
