Usman’s opponent slams referee after defeat at UFC 245

Colby Covington slammed referee Marc Goddard following his stoppage defeat to Kamaru Usman at UFC 245.

The welterweight title fight headlined UFC’s final pay-per-view of 2019 and was a contest of non-stop action between two bitter rivals. Covington appeared to suffer a broken jaw mid-way through the fight, but Usman had to wait until the final round to stop his opponent.

Goddard waved off the fight with Usman raining down punches on a grounded Covington, but the former interim champion was furious with the officiating, as well as the stoppage.

Covington hit out at Goddard, one of the UFC’s best referees, on Twitter, saying: ‘Normally people do their f****** in the bedroom, not the octagon, Marc Goddard.

‘I go in there to kill or be killed. You robbed me of that. You robbed the people of a fair fight. ‘You should be ashamed of yourself. Fake nut shot. Fake eye poke. Fake stoppage. Fake ref.’

Covington did not hang around in the octagon after Usman was announced as the champion and was taken to hospital immediately after the fight.

Scans showed a ‘non-displaced midline mandible fracture’ in Covington’s jaw and UFC boss Dana White was full of praise for his beaten fighter.

‘To have a broken jaw in almost the second or third round and almost finish the fight is pretty fight,’ he said.

Covington was furious with Goddard’s decision to step in.

‘So for as big as his mouth is and all the stuff that he talks, the guy can fight. He’s talented and he’s tough.

‘He came in here with a game plan tonight.

‘Not just fight but how he handled the fight and all those kind of things. And Usman shut it down.’
