Serie A returns: Juventus, Lazio and Inter fight for the title

Unlike the conclusions to the Bundesliga and Premier League campaigns, there’s a real title fight on in Italy.

Juventus lead the way in the standings but are just one point ahead of second-place Lazio, with Inter a further eight points back.

Antonio Conte’s side do, however, have a game in hand over their rivals and, if they beat Sampdoria in it, they will enter the race once more.

What’s more, Juventus and Lazio meet in matchday 34, opening the door for Inter to really stake their claim at the top.

A hurt Juve

Maurizio Sarri’s side returned to action in the Coppa Italia with goalless draws against AC Milan in the semi-final and Napoli in the final.

That’s the first time Juventus have gone two games without scoring since October 2015.

On top of that, the Bianconeri were beaten on penalties in the final against Napoli, with Cristiano Ronaldo not getting the chance to take one.

The Portuguese superstar hasn’t lived up to his usual high standards since returning to action this month and his form is worrying Sarri.

Lazio could be on course to win their first Serie A title since 2000.

Simone Inzaghi’s team were enjoying a remarkable campaign before the coronavirus pandemic put a halt to the season earlier this year.

They’ve not lost in their last 21 league matches, which is a club record.

You have to go back to September for Lazio’s last defeat, which came at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in a 1-0 loss to Inter.

Serie A’s scoring charts could change a lot between now and the end of the season.

Lazio’s Ciro Immobile currently leads the way with 27 goals and has Gonzalo Higuain’s Serie A record total of 36 in his sights.

Cristiano is a further six goals behind the Italian in second, with Romelu Lukaku a further four goals back in third.
