Why Enyimba could not go far in CAF Champions League – Nwaneri

Former captain of Enyimba International Football Club of Aba, Obinna Nwaneri, has sensationally revealed why his former team will always fail in their bid to forge ahead in the continental championships.

Nwaneri who was particularly bitter about the club’s elimination from the Africa Champions League said the club lacked what it takes to win the competition.

Enyimba beat Al Merreikh of Sudan 2-1 at the Aba Township Stadium Wednesday, but the victory not enough to see the two-time Champions League winners into the group stage of the championship.

Enyimba’s former skipper said the club lacked character and their inability to carry the local fans along in the competition.

“Enyimba is no longer the team we used to know in those days when they won the CAF Champions League back-to-back. They have lost everything that made them formidable because they ignored the support of the home fans who always stood by them when the chips were down,’ Nwaneri said.

The former Super Eagles star, Nwaneri also noticed that the club never recruited players from the city to beef-up the team, adding that Aba fans always believe in their players and support them to win for their respective local clubs.

“When we were in Enyimba, fans always came out to support us with the team. We enjoyed maximum support and it helped the club to attain the impossible heights in African football,”he said.
