The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youths and Sports Development Adesola Olusade has revealed that his ministry needs at least the sum of 2 billion naira to maintain the flamboyant edifice of the Abuja National Stadium.
In a chat with sports writers in his office, Olusade defended the reason why they have not refurbished the stadium and make it readily available for use for sports events.
The sports ministry’s Director of Facilities Architect Gambo in explaining the reason for non use of the mainbowl of the Abuja National Stadium for some field events like football for the just concluded National Sports Festival said it required at least 6 months and lot of millions of naira to put the pitch of the stadium in a good playing condition.
Olusade also disclosed that the sports ministry is considering concessioning of the stadium by corporate bodies who could expertly make profitable use of the stadium and also main maintain its standard to be able to host International matches.
“The break down of what is expected to maintain the stadium (by Julius Berger) is about 2 billion naira annually. That is far, far bigger than what the ministry receives to maintain the entire ministry. So we have been trying our best to make the best decision concerning the situation even we are thinking of concession too”, the Permanent Secretary disclosed.
