Ademola Lookman possesses ability to play in multiple positions, says Rodgers

Leicester City’s new-man, Ademola Lookman, possesses the ability to play in multiple positions, but manager Brendan Rodgers has admitted his preferred role is the one currently occupied by Harvey Barnes.

Lookman was Leicester City’s final signing of the transfer window, arriving on loan from RB Leipzig.

The winger has been on Rodgers’ radar since he first made his name at Charlton, and the manager is confident he has the qualities to excite City supporters.

But the question of where he will fit into the side remains. With Barnes on the left and James Maddison playing centrally, it seemed the right-hand flank was where Lookman would slot in.

But Rodgers has said it is on the left where he would like to play, the position he featured from most often during his spell at Fulham last year.

“I’m really excited about working with Ade,” Rodgers said at his press conference on Thursday, speaking about the 23-year-old for the first time.

“He’s a top talent. I wanted to take him to Celtic when he was at Charlton. I was aware of him when he was 15 or 16.

“He has all the tools, he has a great dribbling ability, physically he’s good, he’s got a good view of the game, he’s very honest to the game, he works so hard, he has an eye for a goal.

“My hope is that this environment will allow him to flourish and give him that stability to shine. He’s a great man, still very young, and hopefully he can find a home here. I have no doubt the Leicester City supporters will be excited by him.

“What was important for us in our squad was to have that talent that we can bring into the game or start in the game. He has big ability and we hope our team structure will allow that to flourish.

“He can play in a number of positions. His preferred position is off the left side. I saw him enough when he was at Charlton and he can play on the inside as well, in behind the striker, and he can play off the right.

“He’s very balanced. He’s got two great feet, you wouldn’t know which was the strongest, he can strike the ball so well off both sides.

“His contribution will be dependent on the tactic we want to use in the game. He’ll be very important.

“Harvey is a different type of player, more direct, super fast in carrying the ball. Both are different types and both would prefer to be on the left but they are multi-functional.”

City fans might get to see Lookman for the first time this weekend with the winger available to feature against Manchester City.
