Afcon 1992: Eagles thought they were unbeatable–Abedi Pele

Africa football legend Abedi Pele has revealed the reasons why Nigeria’s Super Eagles lost to the Black Stars of Ghana in the semi-final of the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations in Senegal.

Pele recalled that Nigeria felt they were unbeatable prior to the match which they lost 2-1.

Mutiu Adepoju scored for the Eagles but goals from Pele who scored the equaliser and Prince Polley denied the three-time Africa champions a place in the final.

“In 1992, Nigeria thought they were untouchable because they had the men but we surprised them.”

“I asked him (the corner kick taker) to give me the ball because I believed the guy marking me, I could move without him seeing it. The guy marking me was nowhere to be found but because I had one step ahead of him, I was gone. That was the only direction I could go and I was fortunate that there was no one on that post,” he spoke to GTV Sports Plus.

A Rashidi Yekini goal against Zaire now the Democratic Republic of Congo had sent Nigeria into the last four.
