AFCON 2021: Eguaveon invited me because I’m a good player – Nwakali

Kelechi Nwakali said he’s not bothered by the mixed reactions in the media over his inclusion in Super Eagles squad for the ongoing African Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

Nwakali made the 28-man squad despite playing in the Spanish second division.

Although, the midfielder has been a regular player for Huesca this season, but he has no goal to his name and pundits suggested, he shouldn’t have made the cut over Akinwunmi Amoo who had a brilliant season in Sweden.

Reacting to the suggestion, Nwakali said he’s unbothered by what people thinks about his selection, and only focusing on proving himself to the coach.

“I’m not under any pressure, because if I’m not good, the coach won’t call me.

“What I owe the coach is to give my best in every training session and the game, and to make sure I live to expectations.”

“I don’t think about what anyone says or thinks, I just want to work for the coach

Nwakali eventually made his debut in the 1-0 win over Egypt on Tuesday — doning jersey number 25.

On the choice of his jersey number, Nwakali said: “I didn’t pick my jersey. Before I joined the team, the equipment manager said he picked jersey number 25 for me, because Kanu Nwankwo was my role model,” he concluded.
