AFCON: Eagles will continue to soar higher – Eguavoen

Super Eagles interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen, has saluted Nigeria’s’ character in Tuesday’s triumph over Egypt and vowed that they are going to play all their games at the Cameroon tournament like an AFCON final.

Three-time winners Nigeria downed the record seven-time champions 1-0 in their heavyweight showdown played in Garoua to go top of the log with 3 points on match-day-one in Group D.

It was a convincing performance by Nigeria who overwhelmed Egypt offensively and defensively too in a match The Pharaohs’ talisman Mohamed Salah was shackled.

“We know that we can mix it up with ball possession and going direct when necessary,” Eguavoen said in a post-match interview.

“So we had three things in mind: first initiative was to win the game, after winning the game keeping the ball, and then keeping Salah and cutting him out of the game.”

Eguavoen said Nigeria will continue to exhibit humility despite the big win but with an eye firmly on the prize.

“We are going to approach every game like it is a final so we are going to take it game after game and see where we will get to because every team that has come to AFCON should be respected regardless of the name of the country,” Eguavoen said.

“So if you don’t plan well and put in effort you can be shocked.

“I don’t know who is going to win it but we will try in our own way to approach every game with every seriousness it deserves.”

Nigeria face Sudan on January 15 in their penultimate Group D match seeking a victory that would secure their last 16 passage with a match to spare.
