AFCON U-20: Flying Eagles ready for Mozambique’s challenge

Flying Eagles will book their place in the quarterfinal of the 2023 U20 AFCON with a win over the Black Mambas of Mozambique.

Kick-off time is 6pm in Nigeria and the venue is the Suez Canal Stadium in Ismailia.

After stumbling to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Senegal on the opening day of action, the Junior Eagles revived their hopes in the tournament courtesy of a 1-0 victory over hosts Egypt in midweek.

It was a spirited performance by the team led by coach Ladan Bosso against Egypt, who were also desperate for a result on the day after they could only play out a goalless draw on the opening day of the competition.

Bosso said top target in Egypt is a ticket to the 2023 FIFA U20 World Cup in Indonesia in May.

Nigeria are now second in Group A with three points from two matches, while Senegal are already through to the last-eight after they beat Mozambique 3-0 to record their second straight win.

The Flying Eagles will battle Mozambique for the first time at this level.

They will again be without injured midfielder Daniel Daga and striker Ahmed Abdullahi, who was sent off against Senegal on Sunday.

Both players could be available for selection should the Flying Eagles live up to expectations and reach the quarterfinal tomorrow.

The Junior Mambas, on the other hand, made history when they got their first-ever point at the U20 AFCON on the back of the draw with Egypt.

Hosts Egypt will also need to beat Senegal tomorrow to make it out of the group.
