Africa Tour: Federer Shuns Nigeria Again!

Tennis star, Roger Federer has again showed that Nigeria is not among the Africa countries that will be benefiting from his charity programme which is aimed at giving the African child quality education through sports.

For the last 15 years, the tennis star has been investing in Africa through sport and education by raising funds to cater for children through organized exhibition matches with some prominent personalities and philanthropists.                                 

This year, the Swiss picked Zambia ahead of Nigeria and was at the Southern Africa country on Monday to meet with the nation’s president Edgar Lungu. An excited Lungu shared photos of the courtesy call by the tennis star to Zambia’s seat of presidency, State House on Facebook.

“He is in the country to check on his foundation, the Roger Federer Foundation (RFF), which aims at providing equitable access to quality basic education to children.”

Federer said he became inspired to give back to the society following a visit to Africa years back with his mother who is from South Africa.

“What got me going 15 years ago is going to South Africa on vacation as a little boy with my mum, who is from South Africa.She was born in Johannesburg, the values that she taught me and my dad.

“When I got into tennis and was finally able to make some money and make a name for myself, you feel fortunate and how do you share that feeling with other people. And I just thought education is something that really interests me. I thought let me get stuck into early child education and here we are so it is very exciting.”
