Manchester United and Argentina striker, Sergio Aguero will be hoping to return to full fitness in time for this summer’s World Cup in Russia after undergoing a minor knee surgery on Monday.

Aguero returned to action as a substitute in the derby defeat to Manchester United and was on the receiving end of a rash challenge in the penalty area from Ashley Young that went unpunished by referee Martin Atkinson.

The Argentine forward made another brief appearance during City’s futile attempt at a Champions League comeback against Liverpool last week, but manager Pep Guardiola ruled the 29-year-old out of Saturday’s 3-1 win over Tottenham, citing Young’s challenge as the cause of the injury.

Club medical staff decided Aguero would have minor surgery and he was flown to Barcelona for consultation with Dr Ramon Cugat last week, went under the knife on Monday to address cartilage damage.

Aguero did not specify a return date and his condition is arguably of greater concern to Argentina ahead of their World Cup campaign, although the typical period of recovery is approximately one month.

Argentine are set to open their quest for global glory against Iceland on June 16 before facing Super Eagles on June 2 at the Saint Petersburg Stadium in their final group game.

The 29-year-old is confident the problem will easily clear in time to play for Argentina at the World Cup.

“Recovering from an arthroscopy on my knee,” Aguero tweeted. “Fully motivated to get back soon to the field.”
