Aguero tempted by Chelsea switch, dreams Premier League records

Sergio Aguero’s desire to break Premier League records has boosted Chelsea’s chances of signing the Argentine this summer.

Aguero is set to become one of the most sought-after free agents in world football when his contract at Manchester City expires at the end of the season.

He is aware of interest from Chelsea, who are determined to improve their attack and are also targeting Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland.

While Aguero is also tempted by potential moves to Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain, sources close to him insist his determination to move up the all-time Premier League goal-scoring charts could see him stay in England.

The 32-year-old is No4 in the list of leading scorers, with 181 goals – just six behind third-placed Andy Cole.

While Alan Shearer’s total of 260 looks out of reach, second-placed Wayne Rooney’s 208 could be a realistic target if he signed a two- or three-year contract at Stamford Bridge.

Aguero has been able to talk to clubs from abroad since the turn of the year – giving the giants of Europe a head start on Chelsea in their attempts to land City’s all-time record scorer. The lure of Spain’s big two, Juve and PSG are said to appeal to him as he considers his next step.

But he has always been settled in England and sources say Chelsea are “at the table” as Thomas Tuchel and chief Marina Granovskaia consider ways to address a forward line that has looked blunt, despite the signings Timo Werner and Kai Havertz last summer.

As a free agent, Aguero could become one of the highest-paid players in the country on more than £250,000-a-week, which would rule almost every Premier League club other than Chelsea, given he would never risk his standing with City fans by contemplating a move to hated rivals Manchester United.

Last week Tuchel described the striker as “outstanding” and “world-class”.

Roman Abramovich is expected to invest heavily again this summer after spending around £220m last year to close the gap on Liverpool and City.

A top-quality striker is considered a priority, with Haaland still believed to be at the top of Chelsea’s wanted list.

The Norwegian’s agent, Mino Raiola, and father, Alfe-Inge, travelled to Spain last week, where it is claimed they met prospective buyers Barca and Real. It is also claimed they were due to travel to London for more meetings.

Tuchel did not deny interest when addressing the situation last week.

He said: “He’s a Borussia Dortmund player, and of course there’s big news around him and his agent. And it seems like they are creating a race for the player.

“But still everybody needs to accept, and I will fully accept, that he is a Borussia Dortmund player.”
