Ajagba among top five heavyweight boxing prospects for 2020

Undefeated so far in the professional ranks, Efe Ajagba has been named among the top five heavyweight prospects to watch in 2020 by SB Nation, a sports blogging network owned by Vox Media.

The 6-foot-6, 106kg Ajagba was named by the United States based network with the likes of Daniel Dubois, Filip Hrgovic, Joe Joyce and 2016 Olympics gold medalist Tony Yoka.

Ajagba, who has won 11 out of 12 fights via knockouts, capped a brilliant 2019 by beating Georgian Iago Kiladze in the fifth round at the Toyota Arena, California last month.

The 25 year-old had also beaten Ali Eren Demirezen on points, ex WBO European champion Michael Wallisch and Amir Mansour earlier in the year.

The 2015 African Games gold medalist drew international attention in 2018 when opponent Curtis Harper exited the ring rather than fight after the first bell rang, resulting in a disqualification which become the shortest professional boxing match in history.

Ajagba, now based in Houston, Texas, trains with Ronnie Shields who speaks highly of his work ethic and willingness to learn and the legendary coach had earlier predicted that 2020 would be a defining year for the 2016 Olympian.

“We have to keep sharpening him (Ajagba) up all the time,” Shields said. “I am telling you, 2020 will be a big year for Efe Ajagba.”

Ajagba, who went 41-2 with 30 knockouts as an amateur, is managed by Premier Boxing Champions under manager Shelly Finkel and Ringstar Sports promoter Richard Schaefer.
