Akinwunmi hails Oshoala as Football4girls camp kicks off

First Vice President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Seyi Akinwunmi has commended Super Falcons captain, Asisat Oshoala for bringing smiles to the faces of young aspiring footballers through her Football4girls program.


The 2019 edition of the annual Asisat Oshoala Football Championship for Girls, a philanthropic initiative by that FC Barcelona forward kicked off on Wednesday with over 200 girls in attendance at the Campus Mini Stadium.
In a chat with Sportinglife.ng, Akinwunmi, who also doubles as the Lagos State FA Chairman, enjoined other well to do in the society to take a cue from the Nigeria international by giving back to the society.
“Since the first one I attended, there has been tremendous progress. We must ensure that we support this kind of foundation. We’ve seen the impact on their lives already. I saw many of the girls when they were little and I am proud of them today.
Hopefully next year, we will get more involved in ensuring that this project is bigger than this.
“I’ve always said that the benefits of giving back is beyond what we see. I believe that when you sow in someone’s life, you are benefiting that person, you are benefiting yourself and the society. So everybody that has the ability should be involved in something like this no matter how small,” Akinwunmi said.
Sportinglife.ng reports that the girls on the first day of the championship were divided into two groups of amateur and secondary school players.
The screening will end on the second day of the championship and talented players will be picked from the two groups to compete in the championship finals which will be held from December 21 to 24.
According to the organisers, the Most Valuable Player of the championship will be given a football scholarship to training in Spain while 23 other players will be enrolled in the Barcelona Academy in Lagos.
