Akwa United pip Yobe Stars in Damaturu

Akwa United showed they are already coming around from a calamitous start to the season in Group B with a heartwarming 1-0 away win over Yobe Desert Stars in Damaturu.

The Promise Keepers have now done a double over Ngozi Elechi’s men in their last two visits to the place having secured another away win last season on the same August 27th Stadium, Damaturu.

In the absence of Michael Ibe who has just secured a lucrative deal in Jordan, it was the turn of Mfon Udoh to shine as he netted his third goal of the season in the 30th minute for the only goal of the tie.

The win lifted Akwa United to seventh in Group B with right points from six games but Yobe Desert Stars slumped to 11th with six points from five matches.

At the Lafia Township Stadium, Nasarawa United defeated Plateau United in a North Central local derby 2-1 to improve their points haul to nine points and sixth in the group.

Sunusi Ibrahim and Adeshola Johnson gave the Solid Miners a 2-0 cushion in the seventh and 54th minutes but a late strike from Emmanuel Odafe ensured a frenetic end to the fixture.

The loss saw the 2017 league champions slip to the relegation zone in the absence of their head coach, Abdu Maikaba who is away on national assignment with the Flying Eagles in Niger Republic. They are 10th with seven points from six matches.
