Alex Telles joins Sevilla on season-long loan

Manchester United left-back Alex Telles joins Sevilla on a season-long loan.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Sevilla are covering Telles’ wages in full and the deal does not involve an obligation to buy.

Telles is under contract until 2024 and the club has the option of an additional year, yet I think they will hope he performs at a high level in La Liga to earn a permanent transfer that would see United get close to the €15 million (rising to €20m) they paid for him.

The 29-year-old joined United from FC Porto in 2020 and made 22 starts last season. However, Telles did not impress, and it was clear that we needed a better left-back  to push Luke Shaw or even start.

Tyrell Malacia’s arrival signalled the end of Telles’ United career and he made most of his appearances during pre-season at centre-back.

Sevilla will hope this loan deal is more successful than when they signed Anthony Martial on a 6-month deal in January. The Frenchman has been given a chance under Erik ten Hag but will miss the start of the season due to injury. Telles becomes to second first team player to be sent out on loan this summer after Dean Henderson.
