Arsenal to pay another £6m for Onana transfer after he appeals doping ban to CAS

Arsenal target Andre Onana had his 12-month doping ban appeal heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on Wednesday.

And the outcome could reportedly cost Arsenal £6million.

The Ajax goalkeeper was suspended from football for a year in February after banned substance Furosemide was found in his urine in October.

Onana, 25, has claimed he accidentally took one of his wife’s pills while feeling unwell, believing it to be a ‘simple aspirin’.

And the Cameroon international – who has just one year left on his contract in Amsterdam – has now had his case heard, with Uefa calling for CAS to stick with the original verdict.

An Ajax statement read: “Onana was able to convey his story well and the arbitrators took ample time to listen to it.

“He has asked the CAS remove the sentence that has been placed on him, or at least for a sentence considerably shorter than the twelve months imposed.

“During the period of suspension, the goalkeeper may not participate in any sporting activity and must train on his own.

“He has made it clear that this is difficult for him. Uefa’s position has not changed.

“The European Football Association wants the CAS to maintain the 12-month suspension ruling. It is not yet known when the CAS decision will be announced.”

Arsenal will be keeping a close eye on the CAS ruling as they look to bring the former Barcelona academy star to the Emirates.
