With Jurgen Klopp and his first-team away in Qatar for the Fifa Club World Cup, the Reds’ academy stars were left to compete at Villa Park.

Despite having more shots (15), with eight on target, Liverpool were undone by Conor Hourihane’s free-kick, a freak Morgan Boyes own goal and a Jonathan Kodjia double inside 45 minutes.

Moraes added a fifth goal in second-half injury-time.

Liverpool started the game brightly and could have been ahead if Villa goalkeeper Orjan Nyland had not denied close-range efforts from 16-year-old Harvey Elliott and Herbie Kane.

The Reds named their youngest ever line up with an average age of 19 years, six months and three days.
