Atalanta accepts €55m Spurs bid for Romero

Atalanta have reportedly accepted a bid from Tottenham for centre-back Cristian Romero.

The Argentine has been Spurs’ top centre-back target this summer and they have now got their man.

That’s according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who says Atalanta have accepted Spurs’ official bid of €50m plus €5m add ons for the 23-year-old.

Barcelona were thought to be challenging Spurs for Romero, but Romano confirmed that the Catalans have never been in the frame.

Former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson is an admirer of Romero, but says the club still need to look to make further signings, as they lack leadership following the departure of Toby Alderweireld.

“You have to trust Paratici’s knowledge of the Italian market,” Robinson said. “In that field he is an expert so he will know if a deal is good value or not.

“A lot of people won’t know a lot about Romero. I watched him in the Champions League a couple of times last season and I was impressed. He looks like a top-class player so it will be interesting to see if that one gets over the line.

“Spurs need leaders though. I don’t know if there is a language barrier or whether Romero speaks good English but they need someone who is an organiser back there.”
