Awoniyi finally signs £6.5 million permanent deal with Union Berlin

After close to a dozen loan deals since signing for Liverpool in 2015, it might be safe that Nigerian Striker Taiwo Awoniyi has finally settled for good.

The Nigeria junior international formerly sealed a permanent deal with current club Union Berlin today with the German club paying £6.5 million about N3.6billion to keep the 24 year old for good.

Awoniyi spent last season on loan at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei, scoring five goals in all competitions and assisting four more before a torn thigh muscle disrupted his campaign.

The former U-23 ace helped Union qualify for European competition for just the second time in their history last term, and he is delighted to settle at the club after seven consecutive loan spells away from Liverpool.

“After lots of loan moves in previous years, I want to finally come and have a home,” Awoniyi said. “I owe so much to Union, so it makes me happy and proud to be back here. It’s fantastic to continue on the great path with the club. I’ll give everything to quickly pick up where I was before my injury.”

Awoniyi, who will wear the No.14 jersey in 2021/22, will meet the rest of the squad in Austria and could feature against Nice on 24 July.

Awoniyi represented Nigeria at the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup and went on to win the tournament, scoring four goals during the competition. He also represented Nigeria at the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand after winning the 2015 African U-20 Championship in Senegal.

On 12 April 2015, he scored a brace on his debut for the Nigeria U-23 team in a match against Zambia, as his team went on to qualify for the 2015 All African Games.

He was selected by Nigeria for their 35-man provisional squad for the 2016 Summer Olympics. It is no doubt time for Awoniyi to test what it is like to have a permanent base
