Awoniyi, Mainz05 seek return to winning ways against Bremen
Nigeria’s junior international and Mainz05 Centre forward Taiwo Awoniyi will be hoping for an opportunity to sing victory song as the Bundesliga side take on Werder Bremen tonight.
Mainz05 have recorded back to back defeats, going into today’s encounter fresh from a 4-0 demolition by Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.
Although Awoniyi was an unused substitute in Saturday’s bashing, he however played for about 45 minutes in a previous tie that equally ended in a 2-1 loss to Augsburg.
The last five matches has seen the club earn three wins including 5-1 defeat of Hoffenheim away and two losses with 15 points in 15 matches so far played.
It has not been rosy for Werder Bremen either as the coach Florian Kohfeldt tutored side have had their fair share of losses with just a win in five matches. They head into tonight’s match fresh from a 6-1 bashing by fifth placed Bayern Munich.
Awoniyi who joined Liverpool on a long term deal from Belgian side KAA Gent, began his long term loan sojourn with Maniz on August 6 this year, contributed in no small measure to Nigeria’s qualification for the U-23 Cup of Nations, despite the team’s failure to pick one of the tickets to the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.
