Barcelona commence pre-season on Saturday

Barcelona get their pre-season underway this Saturday, July 10, but Ronald Koeman will be without many of his first-team regulars.

As a result of the European Championship, the Copa America and the Olympic Games, the Blaugrana will have just 11 first-team players available, so there are nine players from the B team that have been called up to make up the numbers.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Sergino Dest, Gerard Pique, Miralem Pjanic, Ousmane Dembele, Riqui Puig, Neto, Philippe Coutinho, Sergi Roberto, Ansu Fati and Samuel Umtiti are the first-team squad members that have been included.

From the B team, Koeman will have Monchu, Ilias Akhomach, Gavi, Arnau Comas, Santi Ramos Mingo, Nico Gonzalez, Arnau Tenas, Alex Collado and Inaki Pena at his disposal.

Absence of Ilaix Moriba
There is one name that has notably not been included in the list of those set to arrive for pre-season on Saturday: Ilaix Moriba.

The 18-year-old forced his way into Koeman’s plans towards the end of last season and found himself ahead of more senior members in the squad, such as Pjanic and Puig, with regard to the pecking order.

Ilaix’s contract at Barcelona comes to an end in 2022 and his camp have been unable to reach an agreement over a new deal with the club, which has led to uncertainty about his future at the Camp Nou.

Now, RAC1 report that Ilaix will not take part in Barcelona’s pre-season preparations if he doesn’t renew his contract soon.

The Barcelona players will undergo the relevant COVID-19 and health tests on Saturday and Sunday, before the first training session at the Ciudad Deportiva Joan Gamper takes place on Monday.

During the coming week, beginning on July 12, Koeman has scheduled five morning training sessions. On Thursday and next Sunday, the squad will rest.

Of the 11 first-team players named in the squad, four – Ter Stegen, Dembele, Coutinho and Ansu Fati – have various injuries.

Barcelona will play their first friendly against Nastic de Tarragona at the Estadi Johan Cruyff on July 21 at 19:00 CEST before hosting Girona three days later.
