And De Jong was instrumental for Ajax last season as they captured a domestic double and reached the Champions League semi-finals.
The Netherlands international saw his current side secure their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League, but he looked heartbroken after the full-time whistle.
De Jong was spotted with his hands on his waist looking up into the sky before dropping his head down in disappointment as his teammates congratulated one another.
Ajax have held a strong connection with their former player and even celebrated his signing for Barcelona in the summer by hiring out a bus and a full page in a Spanish newspaper.
The Dutch side were condemned to a 1-0 defeat to Valencia on Tuesday and finished third in Group H, one point behind Chelsea and the Spanish club.
Meanwhile, Barcelona finished top of Group F and secured a 2-1 victory over Inter Milan at the San Siro on Tuesday.
