Barcelona vs Napoli: Fixture may hold behind closed doors

Barcelona’s Champions League second leg against Napoli on March 18 could be played behind closed doors due to the Coronavirus.

It would be the latest in a long line of sporting fixtures to have been disrupted by the virus.

“At the moment it’s just a thought, no decision has been taken,” Gerard Figueras, the minister of sport in the Catalan government, told Catalunya Radio.

“We need to talk with Barcelona about it,

“We’ll have a meeting this Monday or Tuesday.”

The Catalan government are attempting to find a balance between being safe, whilst also ensuring that the disruption of sporting events has a minimal impact on wider society.

“Common sense says that this game should be played behind closed doors,” continued Figueras.

“With sports we have to be as strict as possible with the application of protocols and sanitary recommendations,

“That’s even though it might have sporting and economic consequences.”

While Naples itself isn’t a risk zone, Figueras pointed out that Italy as a whole has been a risk area.
