Ben Davies for Liverpool Medical Monday

Liverpool have agreed a £2million fee to sign Preston North End defender Ben Davies.

The 25-year-old will undergo a medical on Monday morning ahead of sealing a shock move to Anfield.

Davies had agreed to go to Celtic in the summer and talks had advanced to bring that deal forward but Liverpool have stepped with Jurgen Klopp desperate to add a specialist centre back to their depleted squad.

Liverpool were still working on other targets but are now on the verge of signing Davies with Sepp van den Berg set to join Preston as cover for their outgoing man.

Davies has been a regular at the back for the Championship side this season, playing in 19 out of Preston’s 27 second-tier matches. Left-footed Davies came through the Preston academy, breaking into the first-team in 2017 after five loan spells away.

Klopp’s Reds have suffered several injury woes at centre-back this season with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez picking up long-term injuries at the back end of 2020.

Furthermore, Joel Matip has struggled for consistency fitness-wise, while stand-in defender Fabinho has also missed several matches this season due to troubles on the treatment table.

The Premier League champions played rookie Nathaniel Phillips and makeshift centre-half Jordan Henderson at the back in their Premier League game at West Ham.
