bizzare? Northern Territory golf prize is a man-eating croc!

 

It could be the wildest trophy in world sport, and it awaits the winner of the Northern Territory PGA Championship.

Whoever emerges victorious this weekend in the Top End will pose for a photo they probably won’t soon forget.

Instead of the common cutlery, the unique trophy, which couldn’t be more Australian, is a huge mounted crocodile skull with a huge golf ball wedged in its life-size teeth.

Some golf identities have labeled it ‘Chubbs’ Revenge’, a playful reference to Chubbs Peterson from the iconic golf movie Happy Gilmore, starring Adam Sandler.

For those who haven’t seen the fictional film, Chubbs was a professional golfer who was forced to retire from the sport early when an alligator bit his hand.

He then becomes the coach of former ice hockey misfit Happy Gilmore, who uses his experience to win the tournament championship against arch-rival and movie villain Shooter McGavin.

Play at Palmerston Golf and Country Club kicked off on Thursday, with the likes of Andrew Dodt, Dimi Papadatos and defending champion Aaron Pike set to feature when it matters on Sunday.

Hometown hopeful Pike raised the crocodile head in 2020, beating Michael Sim on the first hole of the playoffs.

“Winning is always special, but winning here (Palmerston) means a little bit more,” Pike said at the time.

‘I had my older brother (Michael) as my caddy, which was great. It is also unlikely to happen again.

“I had my whole family watching, so it means a little bit more.

Other flashy sporting trophies to compete with the crocodile head include the Paris Masters tennis offering, the infamous A-League football ‘toilet seat’ and the iconic Golden Slipper of Australian horse racing.
