Blasphemy lands Buffon in trouble

Juventus goalkeeper, Gianluigi Buffon, has been fined €5,000 for using a blasphemous phrase during the Serie A game against Parma.

The incident occurred in the match on December 19.

An investigation was opened some time afterwards, as it was not initially clear that he had been responsible for the phrase.

Buffon had risked a one-match ban, but was only fined €5,000.

It’s one of several similar situations this season of varying seriousness, which saw players including Roma defender Bryan Cristante and Lazio winger Manuel Lazzari suspended.

Lazio coach Simone Inzaghi had accepted a plea bargain and fine.

Blasphemy is the worst type of swearing in the Italian language and more players are caught on camera because games are played behind closed doors, making it easier to identify them.
