Bolanle Ambode Women Championship kicks-off Wednesday 

A total number of 16 teams will participate in maiden edition of the Bolanle Ambode Women Championship competition which kicks off on Wednesday at the Agege Stadium in Lagos.

The championship powered by the office of the Senior Special Assistant and endorsed by the Lagos State Football Association, (LSFA) is being put together to discover the next generation of Women Football super stars for the state and the country in general.

The competition is scheduled to end on Sunday April 29th with the finals billed for the Agege Stadium.

According to the organizers, the competition which will be on a knock-out basis will see Papa Queens FC take on Dream Stars Ladies Feeders team in the opening match.  Jagunmolu Queens will trade tackles with Kadesh Queens, Vision Queens will face Royaltom Queens, while Lakeside Queens will square up against Jojo Queens in other matches scheduled for Wednesday.

In his speech at a media briefing and draws for the tournament, Senior Special Assistant to the Lagos State Governor on Sports, Anthony Adeyinka Adeboye said the championship tagged Lagos First Lady Cup is to harness more talents like current African Woman Footballer of the Year, Asisat Oshoala and emerging FC Robo player, Rashidat Ajibade.

It is now history to start counting the numerous achievements of a successful Lagos State girl who has achieved a lot in the game of football and Asisat Oshola has become a mentor and guiding example to a lot of girls making them realise that they need not only aspire but they can get their game to the highest level in the world.

“Female football has been an enigma that has been plaguing girls in Lagos State for some time now, with many parents not too comfortable with their female wards leaving home for trainings and competitions in comparison to their male siblings and school mates. That fear is going to stop starting from today,” he added.

“So I tell you all  here today that tell that girl at home, school, street, and anywhere that the sky is the starting point as Lagos State will be taking female football to the highest level,” Adeboye said.

Also, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode on Facility and Infrastructure, Bolaji Yusuf said the competition is strictly for amateur clubs in the state.

In his address, the Executive Chairman of Lagos Island East Local Council Development Area, Honourable Kamal Salau-Bashua, who described the initiative as the one that will change the landscape of developmental competition in Lagos state, pledged support of the 57 local government and LCDA to the tournament. The winner of the competition will be rewarded with N100,000, the 2nd place will go home with N75,000, while the 3rd placed team will be rewarded with the sum of N50,000. There will also be gifts for Golden Boot winner, Best Coach etc.
