Breaking: Joshua loses to Ruiz in Round Seven

Anthony Joshua has lost three of his world title belts to Mexican fighter, Andy Ruiz at the Madison Square Garden in Newyork.  Before the defeat, Joshua held the IBF, WBA and WBO titles.

The shock defeat would be Joshua’s first in his boxing career.

The 29-year-old was stopped in the seventh round in front of a shocked crowd that had tirned out to watch the Briton who was making his debut in the US.

Signs that Joshua may not go the distance surfaced from the third round when he was knocked down twice by his challenger. He was saved by the bell as he wobbled towards his corner.

Joshua was actually the first to take Ruiz to the canvas before he quickly responded a minute later.

It was possibly the most damaging round of his career.

Ruiz sent him to the deck two more times in the seventh round, and – despite returning to his feet – referee Mike Griffin stepped in to bring the clash to an end.

New champion, Ruiz surely matched his words with action when he vowed to floor the former champion. He had only six weeks to prepare for the bout having replaced Jarrell Miller who was suspended after testing positive to banned substances

A rematch is due later in the year in the United Kingdom.
