CAF C/League: Akpeyi sees red but Chiefs clinch victory

Super Eagles and Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi had unimpressive outing in the CAF Champions league tie against Wydad Casablanca of Morocco Saturday in Soweto.

The Nigerian international easily among one of the most experienced goalkeepers in the continent made a costly mistake in the 41st minute of the match leading to his being sent off.  Akpeyi according to reports needlessly handled the ball outside the box and was sent off with former South Africa international Itumeleng Khune taking his place. It was a day mixed fortune for Chiefs. As Akpeyi is red was not enough headache Serb forward Samir

Nurkovic was equally dismissed one minute from time. Luckily the red card harvest did not stop Bernard Parker from grabbing the only goal of the match in the 48th minute to hand Kaizer Chiefs victory. Akpeyi it will be recalled was not part of the Super Eagles party that edged out Benin Republic and Lesotho recently in Poto Novo and Lagos respectively to qualify Nigeria for next year’s Nations Cup.

In another Champions league clash, defenders Badr Benoun and Yassir Ibrahim scored to spare the blushes of title-holders Al Ahly of Egypt Saturday.

Ibrahim equalised four minutes into added time after Benoun converted a penalty as Ahly snatched a 2-2 Group A draw away to bottom club Al Merrikh of Sudan in Omdurman to seal a quarter-finals place.

Ahly will advance to the knockout stage as runners-up, though, after Simba of Tanzania trounced V Club of the Democratic Republic of Congo 4-1 in Dar es Salaam to seal first place.
