CAF Champions League: Rivers Utd ready for Wydad

CAF Champions league campaigners Rivers United will host Wydad Athletic Club of Morocco on Sunday in the second preliminary round at the Adokie Amiesiemeka Stadium at 4pm.

The Garden City landlords have reportedly thrown the gates open with a view to having their supporters turn out in large numbers. The Nigerian side beat Liberian side Watanga in the first preliminary round to advance to the second round.

With a resounding 3-0 victory at home and a lone goal loss away the Stanley Eguma moved on and would be hoping to post an impressive run at home again before the return leg in Casablanca.

If there is one thing The Pride of Rivers would not want to re-occur this season, it is to book early exit in the continental show piece. In the last edition the side failed in their quest to feature in the group stage of the CAF Champions League, after they lost 1-0 to Al Hilal of Sudan.

Many say more need to be done if Nigerian sides are to fly high in the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup respectively.

Since Enyimba won the Champions league back to back in 2003/2004 Nigerian teams have continued to record below par performance with North African sides emerging at all times as tough nuts to crack.

Rivers and Plateau Untied are flying campaigning in the CAF Champions League while Kwara United are on duty in CAF Confederation Cup after Remo Stars failed to survive the early morning hurdle of the championship.
