Can Aruna Quadri mount the podium in Tokyo?

With barely few days to the start of this year’s embattled Olympics one may be tempted to ask where will the Nigerian medal/medals come from?

After the Basketball team’s defeat of USA and Argentina in tune up to the Games hope has risen that perhaps a medal may show lets forget about the colour now in Basketball.

In table tennis which is the main focus here Aruna Quadri who has over the years taken the country’s name to greater height will no doubt be the cynosure of eyes when the battle for medals in this sport begins.

The Nigerian Captain is the highest rated African player going into the Olympics.

Seeded 15 in the  men’s singles competition of the table tennis event Aruna will come face to face with his first opponent when the draw is made this week with 65 players listed for what will certainly be battle royal as every country parades her best at the Olympics.

Quadri who had a quarterfinal finish at the last Olympics in Rio, will no doubt be hoping to better his lot in Tokyo by making it to the podium.

Should he make it, it  will not only be a huge plus for the country it will equally be icing on the cake when he celebrates his birthday which comes up August 9 just a day after the Olympics when the chips would have been down and all nations count medal hauls and loses respectively.

That is not to say he will be the only one to be looked out for in this event as compatriot Olajide Omotayo seeded 49th is in contention just like the duo of Offiong Edem and Olufunke Oshonaike seeded 53rd and 60th respectively in the women’s category will be on parade.
