CAS decision sees La Liga request postponement of two games

LaLiga have made a request to the Spanish football federation (RFEF) for the postponement of two matches of LaLiga Santander’s fourth matchday, following a ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) regarding the players who have been called up for international duty with CONMEBOL national teams.

The games LaLiga requested to be postponed are the duel between Sevilla and Barcelona, as well as the game between Villarreal and Alaves. They were scheduled for September 11 at 21:00 CEST and 18.30 CEST respectively.

This is because those three Champions League teams have European games on that Tuesday, September 14. That would prevent them from playing on the Sunday and the Saturday comes too soon.

“We emphasise that, due to FIFA’s decision, the affected players will rejoin their club teams on Friday after having played three games and many of them will play league matches on Saturday or Sunday, clearly not being in a position to compete under equal conditions with their clubs,” read LaLiga’s statement.

“[LaLiga] will continue with procedures in various judicial bodies since FIFA’s decision on the alteration of the international match calendar transcends this specific problem.

“It is a clear declaration of intent to infringe on the autonomy of domestic leagues, in an abuse of rights.”

In addition, LaLiga rescheduled the rest of the matches that will take place during the weekend after the international break, looking to ensure teams with CONMEBOL players don’t have to play straight away after the break.

“Additionally, LaLiga has offered clubs charter flights for affected players travelling for international duty,” added LaLiga.

“We will encounter this senseless situation once again in October, this time affecting Matchday 9 of LaLiga Santander.”
