Caster Semenya misses 5000m qualifying standard again

It is becoming crystal clear that Double Olympic athletics champion Caster Semenya will not be part of the Tokyo Olympics after missing the mark in the 5000m in Regensburg, Germany.

She missed out of the party again after finishing fourth at the Sparkassen Gala “Running Night” in Regensburg

The two-time 800m Olympics gold medallist, who has moved up to the long-distance event due to World Athletics rules, crossed the line in 15:57.12.

A runner must clock 15:10.00 to meet the Olympic qualifying time.

Germany’s Miriam Dattke won the race in 15:34.92.

At her last race at the end of May in Durban, South Africa, Semenya had set a new personal best of 15:32.15, albeit still 22 seconds outside the qualifying standard.

In April, she won the South African national championships in 15:52.28.

Semenya’s European manager said before the Regensburg meet that the runner will try again on 30 June in Liege, Belgium, although the qualifying cutoff is currently set for the day prior.

In May 2019, a World Athletics eligibility ruling came into effect which prevents female athletes with Differences in Sexual Development (DSD) from competing in events from 400m to one mile (1600m), unless they reduce their testosterone levels.

After failing with appeals at the Court of Arbitration for Sport and the Swiss Federal Supreme Court, Semenya has taken her case to the European Court of Human Rights.

For now, though, she has decided to focus on the 5000m, having originally decided to go for the 200m in March 2020.
