Stunning victory over PSG in the second leg in Paris. The Red Devils were outplayed at Old Trafford last month but produced a remarkable performance at the Parc des Princes to beat the French champions 3-1.

United led 2-1 and Marcus Rashford scored a dramatic penalty in injury-time to send Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side through on away goals. The result means Manchester United have reached the last-eight of the Champions League for the first time since 2014.

It is the first time in Champions League history has progressed to the next round having lost by two or more goals at home in the first leg. Injury-hit United were expected to struggle in the French capital but took the lead after only two minutes as Romelu Lukaku rounded Gianluigi Buffon and slid home into an empty net.

Ligue 1 heavyweights PSG soon hit back, however, dominating possession and creating a number of chances before Juan Bernat capitalised on two Eric Bailly errors to equalise. Belgium international Lukaku restored United’s advantage on 30 minutes after Buffon spilled Rashford long-range effort.

Angel Di Maria, who provided two assists in the first leg, thought he had levelled for PSG after the break but the goal was disallowed for offside. United were heading for an exit despite beating PSG until the visitors were awarded a dramatic and late penalty for a handball on Presnel Kimpembe.

England striker Rashford stepped up and smashed his spot-kick past Buffon, before United held on to secure a famous victory. Speaking immediately after the game, Red Devils legend Rio Ferdinand told BT Sport: ‘I didn’t have the confidence in these boys to do it, 10 boys out, I didn’t see this result coming.

‘Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was brave with his team selection, he had three teenagers on the pitch, the character of these players after the starvation of moments like this.

‘The confidence this will give them. Ole has brought belief back to this team. People were doubting Lukaku – he’s one of many who has been given a new lease of life. ‘I don’t think it’s a penalty but turning your back, as a defender, you get punished for things like that. What a performance and result.’
