Championship leaders Fulham miss Mitrovic in Derby draw

 

Championship leaders Fulham were held to a goalless draw by basement club Derby County on Wednesday as they felt the absence of Aleksandar Mitrovic, the leading goalscorer in English football’s second tier this season.

Fulham, who lost Mitrovic to an unspecified injury, were chasing an eighth successive but ran into a resolute Derby, managed by former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.

The Craven Cottage stalemate meant Rooney’s men had one league point after being hit with a combined deduction of 21 points – 12 for entering administration and nine for breaches of English Football League rules.

Elsewhere Millwall and second-placed Bournemouth also shared the points in a 1-1 draw at the Den.

Dominic Solanke opened the scoring for the Cherries, who before Benik Afobe’s second-half equaliser saw hosts Millwall draw level.

Only the top two clubs at the end of the regular season are guaranteed promotion to the Premier League.

Blackburn Rovers overpowered Peterborough 4-0 as the northwest side enjoyed their second win in three matches.

Harry Pickering headed Rovers into the lead, with Ben Brereton Diaz and Darragh Lenihan also scoring before halftime. Brereton Diaz added a fourth goal on the hour.

Queens Park Rangers beat Huddersfield 1-0 through Luke Amos’s late winner as the west London side moved into fourth place in the table.

Amos, only recently returned from a long-term knee injury, headed in Chris Willock’s cross with nine minutes remaining at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium.

Olivier Ntcham and Jamie Paterson scored for Swansea as Poya Asbaghi’s first game in charge of Barnsley ended in a 2-0 defeat. It was the Yorkshire club’s 10th loss in 11 matches.

Keane Lewis-Potter scored the only goal of the game as Hull beat fellow strugglers Cardiff 1-0.

Cardiff and arch-rivals Swansea were mourning the death aged 77 of former manager Frank Burrows, who had spells in charge of both Welsh clubs.

The Scot, who also enjoyed success as manager of Portsmouth, made his name in football as a member of the Swindon side who, in the 1968/69 season beat English giants Arsenal in the League Cup final before gaining promotion from the old Third Division.

Elsewhere, Tyreeq Bakinson’s goal gave Bristol City a 1-0 win over Stoke at Ashton Gate.
