CHAN 2020: Indomitable lions battle Guinea for third place

Host indomitable lions will be fighting to the finish today as they face Guinea in the third place match of CHAN 2020.

The host suffered a whooping 4-0 demolition in the hands of Morocco and will be hoping to get something to present to their countrymen some. Some had expected them to make it all the way to the final but agreed that they put up a good fight in the tournament.

The playoff for third place is of great importance for the host country, who need to show a reaction of pride after the semifinal disappointment against Morocco. Martin Ndtoungou Mpile’s men have missed out on their target and owe their supporters an apology.

“Against Morocco, nothing seemed to work for us. We have one game left to play in front of our home crowd. We have to show another face, we owe that to all those who pushed us throughout the tournament,” said the Cameroonian coach.

A reaction of pride looks necessary as the objective set before the start of the tournament was to be crowned at home. The third place meeting will not be taken lightly by the Indomitable Lions, who will align the most competitive team possible to dominate a Guinean team that has already tasted this experience before. In 2016 in Rwanda, Mohamed Kanfoury Bangoura’s team was beaten by Côte d’Ivoire to finish fourth. This time, they will try to make amends after seeing their hopes of qualifying to the final dashed by a penalty shoot-out against Mali.

Reaching the last four was already a satisfaction for Bangoura, whose team was considered among the underdogs. And if he wants to finish the tournament third, he is aware of the difficulty of playing against the hosts in front of their audience. “We weren’t expected in the semi-finals like some teams, but we did it even though we lost. Now we have one game left, and it won’t be easy because it’s against the host country. But we will do everything to end the tournament in style. This is what our supporters are waiting for,” Bangoura said.
