Chelsea in limbo as Japan withdraws as Club World Cup hosts

English side, Chelsea are facing a Club World Cup championship wait after Japan had pulled out of hosting the tournament in December.

The Asian nation is implementing greater COVID-19 restrictions, amid the increasing spread of the virus.

The Japan Football Association told FIFA on Thursday that it was unable to host the competition.

FIFA said in a statement: “FIFA would like to thank the JFA for their work and commitment and looks forward to going back to Japan in the future.

“Further details about an alternative host for the Fifa Club World Cup 2021 will be announced by Fifa in due course.”

As Champions League winners, Chelsea are set to face clubs from around the world to compete for the Club World Cup.

A new venue is likely to be announced in the coming weeks or months.
