Chelsea star talks tough despite failing to net in 14 EPL games

Timo Werner is confident the ‘goals will come’ as his Chelsea barren stretched to 19 matches after their 2-1 over Sheffield United on Sunday night.

The £47.5million summer arrival, that could rise to £53m, from RB Leipzig was involved in both of the Blues’ goals in last night’s 2-1 win at Sheffield United.

Despite being forced off through injury, the German star impressed in his display under new boss Thomas Tuchel.

And he has vowed to ‘keep going’ and working hard to end the worst run in front of goal of his career so far.

Werner, 24, said: “It was a good win for us. It was very difficult the whole game against a very good Sheffield United defending high.

“For myself, again no goal but it is good to see that I can help the team with other things at the moment. I keep going.

“I am happy when we win. When I can make two assists like today it is also good but as a striker you want to score.

“It is a long time now for me, the longest in my career. You have to keep going and the goals will come.”

Meanwhile, the forward revealed that he suffered a dead leg while winning the penalty that allowed Chelsea to seal the points.

Werner was brought down by Blades stopper Aaron Ramsdale during the second half inside the box.

And that led to Jorginho converting from the spot to secure a third straight win under Tuchel.

The striker asked his manager to take him off towards the end of the clash and had heavy strapping on his leg.

He said: “It was the penalty. A dead leg, I think you call it.

“The 10-15 minutes after was hard so I told the manager he should take me off because it was a tight game and it is better to have 11 fit players on the pitch than 10-and-a-half.”

Werner will be hoping he recovers in time to continue his impressive form this week.

Chelsea face Barnsley in the FA Cup on Thursday before they battle Newcastle in the Premier League on Sunday.
