Chelsea weighing up move for Areola as Kepa’s replacement

Chelsea are weighing up a move for Alphonse Areola as a potential replacement for Kepa Arrizabalaga, according to reports in France.

It has been a mixed season for Arrizabalaga, who was dropped by Frank Lampard earlier in the year. He has since reclaimed his starting berth, but there are still rumours that Chelsea could be looking for a replacement.

The Blues have already added Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech to their squad ahead of next season. Now, they could be looking for reinforcements at the back.

So far, Chelsea have been linked with a number of goalkeepers, as reports of an exit for Kepa continue to circulate. Among those rumoured to be of interest are Andre Onana, Nick Pope and Roman Burki.

However, Le10 Sport claim there is another name in the frame, in the shape of Areola.

The 27-year-old has spent this season at Real Madrid, on loan from Paris Saint-Germain. He has been unable to dislodge former Chelsea star Thibaut Courtois as number one, and there is no room for him back at PSG, who will be looking to cash in on him.

The French outlet claims that Chelsea have added Areola to their list of targets to replace Kepa. However, Newcastle are also said to be in the hunt – with both clubs planning to open talks for the France international within the next few weeks.

Areola still has three years left on his contract at the Parc Des Princes, but PSG’s desire to sell could present an opportunity for either of the Premier League duo.

Areola was a World Cup winner with France in 2018, but did not play a single minute during the tournament.

Reports emerged last month that Kepa could leave Chelsea on a two-year loan to Valencia.

The Spanish club are wary that they could lose Jasper Cillessen to Ajax this summer, and therefore will need a replacement – potentially giving Kepa the chance to return to his homeland.

When joining Chelsea from Athletic Bilbao two years ago, Arrizabalaga was the most expensive keeper in history. While he has still had some good performances since then, Chelsea could be looking to cut their losses.

However, Valencia may only be able to afford a loan with an option to buy for Kepa.
