Court wrestles Saido Berahino over no show summons

An arrest warrant has been issued for former Stoke striker Saido Berahino after he failed to show up in court in regards to an unpaid £75,000 drink-driving fine.

The former England Under-21 international was due to appear at Willesden Magistrates’ Court in North West London on Tuesday morning to answer the charge, but never turned up.

Berahino, 26, who now plays his football in the Belgian First Division with Zulte Waregem, was banned for 30 months and ordered to pay the five-figure sum after being convicted of drink driving whilst he was playing for Stoke earlier this year.

He was arrested and detained by police after driving his Range Rover over the limit back in February.

The court heard that Berahino had been robbed of jewellery before his arrest, but held it was not a necessity for him to be driving as his partner was at the wheel beforehand.

He was given until September 7 to pay the £75,000 fine.

A deputy judge granted the arrest warrant after stating that Berahino had received prior warnings about the outstanding payment, according to The Mirror.

Berahino received £2.5million from Stoke earlier this year after the Championship club took the action to release him from his contract following his drink-driving conviction.

The striker joined Waregem on a free transfer in August and has scored four times in eight matches for the club.
