Brazilian referee Sandro Ricci would be at the centre when Nigeria takes on Croatia in the second group D game of the FIFA World Cup at the Kaliningrad Arena on Saturday evening.

Aged 43, Ricci who was the fourth official in the opening match between Russia and Saudi Arabia holds a degree in Economics and has worked for the Getulio Vargas Foundation, the University of Brasilia, Foreign Ministry and Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade.

FIFA’s decision to appoint Ricci would not be a welcome development for some members of the Super Eagles particularly John Mikel Obi.

This happened in the football event of the 2016 Olympics in Brazil where Ricci issued yellow cards to Obi, Sincere Seth, Azubuike Okechukwu and Usman Mohammed during Nigeria’s game against Denmark.

Another Eagles player who has also been booked by Ricci is Eagles right back Shehu Abdullahi at the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey.

The 43-year-old who speaks Portuguese and English will be assisted by compatriots Emerson de Carvalho (Assistant Referee 1) and Marcelo Van Gasse (Assistant Referee 2), while Spaniards Antonio Mateu Lahoz and Pau Cebrián Devís are the fourth and fifth officials respectively.
