Danny Ward posting impressive run at Euro 2020

Leicester City goalkeeper Danny Ward has been one of Wales’ “outstanding players” so far at this summer’s Euros, according to Andy King.

The 27-year-old joined Liverpool from non-league side Wrexham in 2012. He only made two senior appearances for the Reds as most of his time there was spent on loan elsewhere.

Ward had loan spells at Morecambe, Aberdeen and Huddersfield Town. He earned a lot of praise from his spell at Huddersfield in particular.

He played 46 times for them that season as the Terriers earned promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs.

Leicester signed Ward in 2018 for around £12.5m. He came in as the club’s new backup goalkeeper to Kasper Schmeichel.

Schmeichel’s form has meant that first team opportunities in the league have been hard to come by for Ward. He is yet to play for Leicester in the Premier League but he has played 14 times for them in cup competitions.

Despite his lack of game time, Ward has been Wales’ number one goalkeeper at Euro 2020. He has been one of their best players so far as he put in stellar showings in each of their Group A games.

50-cap Wales international King has told Sky Sports (as cited by The Leicester Mercury) that Ward has been “absolutely brilliant” for his country:

“He’s been one of Wales’ outstanding players in this tournament.

“He’s been absolutely brilliant. For someone who doesn’t play football for their club week in, week out, he’s assured in everything he’s done.

“It’s not like he’s had to play his way into form or anything like that. He’s hit the ground running and has been outstanding from minute one.

“He’s been commanding, he’s come for crosses and his distribution has been excellent.

“I know him really well so I’m absolutely delighted for him. He fully deserves that number one place at the moment.”
