Day Cisse shocked Chelsea legend Drogba with wonder goal

It is quite difficult to maintain the same tempo year in year out in sports. At a point the law of diminishing return will set in because nature must take its course.

While at Newcastle Senegal international Papiss Cisse scored one of the most incredible, impossible Premier League goals as his bending half-volley – struck from outside the box – helped Newcastle beat Chelsea

But it wasn’t just fans and pundits who couldn’t believe their own eyes. Chelsea striker Didier Drogba – no stranger to a blistering strike – had an incredible on-pitch reaction, which was caught on camera.

As Cisse celebrated, a wide-eyed Drobga looked at Newcastle manager Alan Pardew, shook his head in utter disbelief, turned back to exchange words with Pardew, then even clapped his hands in appreciation.

Drogba was one of Chelsea’s most fiercely competitive players. But even the Ivorian No 11 recognised what an extraordinary goal it was – as evidenced by the fact that Drog and Pards were briefly joined in wonder.

“Real recognises real,” responded one fan to the video, which has been viewed over 10 million times. Another pointed out: “If Drogba is shocked by a goal, then you know it was a great goal.”

“I’m a Chelsea fan, when I saw this goal, I had no other thing to do but to clap,” said one Blues fan, summing up the feelings of many.

Cisse had already given the Magpies the lead with a brilliant left-footed strike in the first half, only to top it in second-half injury time to seal a 2-0 win.

It was the Senegalese striker’s 13th goal in only 12 games as he absolutely hit the ground running after his January 2012 transfer from Freiburg.

Cisse couldn’t quite keep up that scintillating, net-destroying form in subsequent seasons. He eventually left for Chinese Super League side Shandong Luneng in 2016 and currently plays for Turkish side Fenerbahce.

But at least he gave Newcastle fans – and one of the all-time great African strikers in Drogba – a memory they will never forget, with that physics-defying volley at Stamford Bridge.
