Deschamps explains Benzema’s return to French national team

Didier Deschamps called up Karim Benzema to the France squad for the first time since the incident with Valbuena many years ago.

The decision excited supporters, who are licking their lips at the possibility of a Benzema-Mbappe duo up top, and the manager explained to ‘Telefoot’ why he recalled the Madrid star.

“I will not go into detail about my conversation with Benzema, but it was a very, very long chat. There were quite a few exchanges of opinion between the two of us. I’m not going to tell you when, how, or if it was before Benzema’s return. Previously, he didn’t meet certain conditions, now he does. The decision was made to recall him, you can imagine it went well”, he declared.

“You want me to talk about unpleasant things… it was said that I was a racist, for example. Since that day, I’m not the same. I don’t see things the same way, I disconnected from everything, that was very violent. The important thing now is today and tomorrow. The fact that Benzema didn’t come back before didn’t stop the team having good results”, he added.

The message is clear. Deschamps wants to leave behind the controversies of the past and concentrate on working together for the European Championship. For the fans that don’t remember, it’s worth bearing in mind that this mess started when Valbuena suffered from a blackmail which threatened to make public a sex tape of his, something which Benzema allegedly had something to do with.
