Dessers wishes to see Onuachu’s departure from Genk

Genk striker, Cyriel Dessers, is convinced that the departure of international teammate Paul Onuachu would give him the opportunity to prove himself for the Belgian club.

Dessers returned to Belgium, his country of birth, last year as a hero after finishing the previous campaign as the joint-top goalscorer in the Dutch topflight.

The prolific former Utrecht man was expected to lead the line for Genk after sealing a multi-million euro move from Heracles.

But it didn’t go as planned as Onuachu fought his way back to reckoning, developing into a consistent goalscoring machine and condemning Dessers to a constant role on the bench.

Onuachu smashed an incredible 35 goals past opposing goalkeepers in 41 games, earning himself a trio of honours – the Belgian top scorer, the Pro League Footballer of the Year, and the Ebony Shoe, which is for the best African player or player of African origin in the league.

In contrast, Dessers only managed seven goals in 34 matches, introduced into games as a second-half substitute on most occasions.

And with Onuachu expected to move to a bigger club in any of Europe’s top five leagues, Dessers can’t wait to see the back of the former Midtjylland ace.

“Whether they should sell Onuachu? It would be good for me,” said Dessers, as quoted by Voetbalkrant.

Dessers has also given his views about his preferred winner for the UEFA Euro 2020, with the Nigerian international tipping his country of birth to beat Germany and France to the prestigious trophy.
